About HSC
The Humane Society of Charlotte is a private, 501(c)3 non-profit community-supported organization. For over 46 years, HSC has been dedicated to our mission to champion the wellbeing of companion animals and supporting the people who know, love and need them and strives to build a world where there are no more homeless and unwanted animals. In 1982 we became the first low cost spay/neuter clinic to open in the southeast, offering high-quality, affordable surgeries to cats and dogs. In 2022 HSC moved into our new Animal Resource Center, and we are thrilled to have a brand-new state-of-the-art facility which allows us to be able to offer more comprehensive services to our community. Today, within our clinic, our two Spay/Neuter Veterinarians can perform up to 55 spay/neuter surgeries a day between our shelter companion animals, community pets, and TNR cats. We have a talented support staff of 3 highly experienced Registered Vet Technicians and 11 experienced Vet Assistants. Our clinic sees over 8,000 animals in our essential care clinic each year, and we only continue to grow!

The Humane Society of Charlotte believes in working to improve our community by creating new, loving families, and building a world where there are no more homeless and unwanted animals. This is an ongoing process — for every animal we can connect with a new family, another animal in need comes to HSC’s shelter. As a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the HSC relies on the generous support of animal lovers, grants, bequests, and fees for service. HSC is not affiliated with any other animal welfare organizations and we do not receive government funding.
The Humane Society of Charlotte proudly maintains a Live Release Rate of 99% for the animals in our care. This success is achievable through our collaboration with national, state, and local animal groups. The good work we do for animals and people in Charlotte and beyond has not changed.
Our mission extends beyond saving lives. We envision a future where every companion animal receives the physical, medical, and emotional care they deserve and a time when no healthy, treatable animal in our community is euthanized due to lack of time, space, or care.
This vision guides our five focus pillars:
1. Prevention: Building a future... where fewer animals enter shelters through spaying/neutering programs, education on responsible pet ownership, and promoting adoptions.
2. Retention: Supporting pet owners with resources like our Pet Help Center, Pet Food Bank, dog training programs, and financial assistance vouchers to strengthen lifelong human-animal bonds.
3. Sheltering and Placement: Following the tenets of socially conscious sheltering to treat each animal as an individual with appropriate behavior support, low-stress handling techniques, and enrichment opportunities. Evaluating their mental and physical well-being to ensure they are healthy and safe enough for placement.
4. Collaboration: Partnering with shelters in Mecklenburg and the surrounding counties to transfer animals into our adoption program. Collaborating with local, state, and national organizations and other community partners to achieve the best possible outcomes for these animals.
5. Education: Encouraging both children and adults to make informed and empathetic decisions about animals with the hope that they themselves become animal advocates.
