Description
Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine is proud to offer a training program for new/recent graduates or experienced general practitioners who are looking to become a skilled and experienced emergency veterinarian in a supportive and collaborative environment.
This program is designed to provide an in depth and exciting training experience for new graduates looking for a career in emergency medicine or experienced general practitioners looking for a change in pace and to gain new skills.
This program will provide you with the training, support, and experience you need to become a competent and proficient emergency veterinarian. The program will combine one on one mentoring, wet labs, didactic training, and hands-on practical experience. The program will also allow you to work alongside specialists, experienced emergency clinicians, and knowledgeable support staff while you grow your knowledge and skills.
Program Structure
The program will be broken down into sections, with progressively more primary case responsibility as the program progresses. The first 6-8 weeks will be working alongside specialists, learning how the different services operate. The next 8-12 weeks will involve shadowing a daytime ER clinician on sick/unstable cases and taking primary case management of urgent care type cases with direct supervision. As the program progresses, the level of case management will increase until you are taking full primary case management of all cases presenting to the ER with the support of an experienced ER clinician as needed.
There will be 4 weeks throughout the training year with primary case management of hospitalized cases and working alongside the critical care specialists.
Additional opportunities for training throughout the year include daily case rounds with specialists, monthly learning rounds and journal club, wet labs/cadaver procedures, and RECOVER certification. There will also be didactic training and regular topic rounds.
There is a 2 year commitment to Central following completion of the program, pending approval from the hospital. Based on experience level, the training timeframe may be condensed/shortened.
If elected, there will also be the opportunity to gain experience and further training in emergency/on-call surgical procedures including GDV, pyometra, splenectomy, foreign body surgery, etc. There may be the opportunity to join the on-call surgery team following the completion of the program, pending approval of the surgery team.
