The Plant and Animal Health Branch’s Animal Health Centre (AHC) is an American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) accredited, full service provincial veterinary diagnostic laboratory providing and supporting diagnostic, monitoring, investigative, surveillance and regulatory programs for the livestock, poultry and finfish production industries of British Columbia.
As a Veterinary Virologist, you will provide technical expertise for test development and interpretation related to the identification of viral agents associated with naturally occurring disease in domestic animals. You will also supervise and oversee the operation of the Virology, Molecular Diagnostics and the TSE laboratory sections and serve as technical supervisor to the Serology laboratory section of the AHC.
Qualifications for this role include:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent.
- Post graduate training in virology to the master’s level.
- Immediately eligible for a public practice membership in the College of Veterinarians of British Columbia (CVBC).
- Two (2) or more years experience in veterinary virology and/or molecular diagnostics.
- Two (2) years or more experience in a position with similar responsibilities in identification of viral pathogens from veterinary samples, preferably mammalian, avian and aquatic submissions.
- Two (2) years or more experience in test development and validation especially in the development of PCR test methods for the detection viruses.
- Two (2) years or more experience in classical virology methods (e.g., virus isolation and identification, virus neutralization, hemagglutination and hemagglutination inhibition), various molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, nucleic acid hybridization, DNA sequencing and sequence analysis) and serology methods (e.g., ELISA, AGID).
- Two (2) years or more experience utilizing DNA sequence databases such as GenBank and GISAID and experience with Bioinformatics software for comparative nucleic acid sequence analysis, molecular typing and identification.
- Two (2) years or more experience in the operation of a variety of technical equipment including automated high throughput nucleic acid extraction units, conventional and real time thermal cyclers, DNA sequencers (Sanger and next generation) and liquid handling systems.
- Supervisory and managerial experience associated with running virology and molecular diagnostics laboratories.
