The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) is seeking a veterinarian to assist part time
with the EDCC service. The EDCC works to protect horses and the horse industry from the threat of
infectious diseases in North America. The communication system is designed to seek and report
real-time information about disease outbreaks similar to how the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) alerts the human population about diseases in people.
The EDCC Assistant Veterinarian will seek, receive, coordinate and communicate infectious disease
information for industry consumers including horse owners, veterinarians, and state and federal
animal health officials. The individual in this position is expected to have excellent communication
skills, a working knowledge equine veterinary medicine and an understanding of the workings of the
equine industry. This person must be organized and committed to coordinating receiving, recording
and the immediate transfer of information using a variety of communication systems including
telephone, texting, email, Facebook, Twitter and the EDCC website http://equinediseasecc.org/. The
individual in this position will help with documentation, message composition and reporting of
information in coordination with the EDCC Director, Communication Manager, the American
Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Infectious Disease Committee and AAEP staff.
EDCC Assistant Veterinarian Duties:
• Be on call to oversee the EDCC operations on specified times and days.
• Respond to inquiries about current equine infectious diseases and disease outbreaks.
• Respond to inquiries by assembling, posting, and/or forwarding information to the EDCC website,
horse owners, horse organizations, veterinarians and state and federal animal health
officials.
• Participate in evaluation of EDCC website educational information including collaborating with
AAEP members, the AAEP Infectious Disease Committee and industy stakeholders on
resource tools and disease guidelines.
• Verify consumers understanding of information in alerts and on the website.
• Document and keep records of consumer inquiries and EDCC responses.
• Maintain consumer confidence and protect operations by keeping information confidential.
• Maintain professional and technical knowledge of equine infectious diseases.
• Secure information by maintaining the EDCC database.
• Assume complete responsibility for EDCC operations on assigned days and weekends.
Required skills and qualifications:
• Must be a veterinarian
• Excellent communication skills including
o Writing composition
o Interoffice communications
o Owner, Veterinarian and SAHO communications
• Use of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)
• Use of Email, Facebook, Twitter, Google forms and other social media Platforms
• Ability to receive and record accurate information
• Knowledge of equine infectious diseases
• Knowledge in management of equine infectious diseases and biosecurity
Desired capabilities:
• Knowledge of horse industry organizations
• Previous experience with communication systems
Details:
• The individual will be a part-time consultant with scheduled days on duty to over see the
EDCC operations for approximately 160 to 170 days a year including 22 weekends
• Working time is 1-2 hours per day
• The on-call schedule will be by mutual agreement with the EDCC Director
• The position is a wage position which pays $150 per day on-call
• Renumeration will be by a quarterly stipend
• All work will be completed remotely and requires full time internet access
