New and recent graduates welcomed- as well as more seasoned ER clinicians.
Pets ER, an emergency clinic in Salisbury,Maryland- on Maryland's beautiful eastern shore- is in the process of taking applications for an associate position at our hospital. We are open nights, weekends, and holidays. Our busiest months are in the summer as we are located close to some of the best beaches on the east coast- though as our area has grown, we now tend to be busy all year long. My associates enjoy a lot of time off, great compensation, and plenty of support (while still having the freedom to practice as they would like). We take seriously having a good work/life balance as well as providing a flexible schedule. Most our shifts utilize two doctors, so you won’t be on your own. We are also adding urgent care hours on the weekends- those shifts are open as well.
Pets ER enjoys a lot of support from our referring vets. The next closest emergency clinic is about 2 hours away. We practice state of the art medicine. In October of 2018, we moved into a brand new, 5000 square foot facility. This past year we have added ligasure and a plasma sterilizer, allowing us to use surgical staplers as well. We have digital X-ray, full IDEXX labs, ultrasound, and an endoscope. We are also in the process of applying to become VECCS level 3 certified.
The schedule for our associates is very flexible- usually consisting of anywhere from 12-14 shifts a month. This equates to plenty of time off to enjoy travel and the local beaches and outdoors. Baltimore, Washington DC, and Philadelphia are all between 2 and 2 1/2 hours away. There is a regional airport less than 5 minutes away from our clinic as well. Surfers and beach lovers would find themselves in the ideal location. Ocean City, Maryland and Assateague Island (home of the famous ponies) are about 30 miles away. The Chesapeake Bay is in our backyard if kayaking and fishing are of interest. This area is also great for cycling and running- roads are nice and flat and very scenic. We have very active running and cycling clubs. Having two 4 year universities close by (University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Salisbury University), as well as Wallops NASA Flight Facility, gives us access to cultural events and rocket launches. Salisbury is a growing collegiate town that still boasts affordable housing and a relatively low cost of living. There are several local breweries and plenty of good restaurants around. This is a wonderful place to live!
The shifts during the busiest times are covered by two veterinarians and we do a good job of mentoring. We currently employ 5 full time veterinarians and 1 part time/flex time veterinarian. This really helps to keep our schedule flexible. We are hoping to add one or two additional doctors to add some urgent care shifts as well. As we are privately owned and operated, our vets have a lot of freedom to practice as they would like and with the medications and methods that they feel most comfortable. We are fully equipped with endoscopy, ultrasound, full surgical suite (including surgical staplers), iv pumps, digital xray, ligasure, and full inhouse labs (IDEXX CBC, chemistry, and sedivue machines- as well as pt/ptt, lactate, and istat) Our hospital is fully computerized so that it is easier to write our notes and send them to the referring vets in the area. We also have very experienced staff- most of them have been with Pets ER for several years. They basically do it all- you just do the medicine and surgery! It makes emergency medicine fun when you can really trust your staff and other doctors and can all work as a team. I consider my staff my work family and treat them as such.
Compensation is guaranteed base + percentage (prosal) and full benefits including health insurance and SIMPLE IRA retirement plan. We would be willing to mentor and train the right candidate. I believe very much in education and learning and I enjoy teaching and discussing cases. Benefits include membership to VIN, vet girl, and CE to your choice of major conferences (including travel, hotel, and conference fees). Our clinic culture definitely is a very open and sharing one- we like to learn from one another. I would also be willing to help with relocation expenses. Our ideal candidate would have some emergency experience or be very confident in their diagnostic and surgical skills. New or recent graduates welcomed. I enjoy mentoring- and essentially am “on call” for my doctors at all times. We offer a very competitive benefit and compensation package. Last year all of our doctors grossed well over 170k for the year. This is a wonderful opportunity for any vet interested in emergency and critical care and high quality medicine and surgery. If you are interested in this position or have any questions, please contact us!
I am very accessible via email.
Thank you, Dr. Beth Drewer
