Michigan Humane offers a wide variety of opportunities for passionate individuals to help make a difference in the lives of animals while gaining essential veterinary experience in the real world. Applicants should be currently enrolled in a veterinary, pre-veterinary, or veterinary nursing/technical programs. The program is 3 months long and lasts from June 1st through August 2022. Some flexibility may be offered to accommodate semester start and end times. We have opportunities at our facilities in Rochester Hills, Westland and Detroit, MI.

Our program affords students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience building essential technical skills and learning about shelter medicine while helping care for the animals in our shelters. Participant will receive training on how to perform activities such as safe animal handling, physical exams, as while as technical skills like blood draws, surgical prep, catheter placement, and laboratory skills. Participants will also gain exposure to a variety of clinical and shelter medicine topics, such as infectious disease control, neonatal care, surgery and animal behavior. Students will also receive individual mentorship with regular guidance to develop goals and monitor professional development throughout the summer. These are temporary (unbenefited) opportunities and pay is $14 per hour.
Must be a current student enrolled in a veterinary, pre-veterinary or veterinary nursing/technical program.
The Michigan Humane Society, founded in 1877, is the oldest and largest nonprofit animal welfare organization in the state. Each year, MHS achieves 100 percent adoption of more than 8,000 healthy and treatable animals through compassionate care, community engagement and advocacy for humane treatment.
MHS operates four shelter and veterinary centers in Detroit, Rochester Hills, Westland and Howell; seven adoption partnerships with Premier Pet Supply, Petco and PetSmart; and both a Cruelty Investigation Department and a Statewide Animal Response Team.

We provide opportunities to build or expand expertise through a generous CE program, mentorship and exposure to both complex and specialized care.
