Is your clinical skillset rounded out enough to handle an ER caseload without fear?
Are you able to keep a cool head under pressure?
Are you able to make decisions with incomplete information and adapt your plans as things become more clear?
Are you able to reframe failure as a learning experience?
Can you do all of this, heal animals and play nice with your colleagues and clients?
If so, we think you may have just found your new home and we’d love to hear from you.
We would like to hear from you if:
You are an experienced veterinarian with at least 5 years of small animal clinical experience. If you’ve worked in an ER position before that would be great, but it’s not a deal breaker if not. We love teaching people and will bring your skills up to speed. We would be willing to consider a newer graduate if you are the right candidate.
You are emotionally intelligent – you’ll be responsible for clinical care of the patients of course, but also of making sure client needs are met, referring vets are up to date and team harmony is maintained. So, the need to work well with people and handle tough conversations as well as the good ones is paramount.
You’ll enjoy the high intensity and variety that veterinary medicine can throw at you. And thrive in a role where you are the difference between life and death for many of your patients.
You are resilient AND tenacious – veterinary medicine is demanding, but it is super important to us that we are creating a workplace where people can thrive. To that end, if you struggle with fast-paced, high pressure environments, then don’t apply. We’re nice and we’ll care for you, but being an ER vet can be a tough gig. We do not want to break you if you’re not a good fit. So, you have to have the mental judo skills to bend, rebound, learn and improve.
You are a stand out communicator – you’ve learned that listening to and empathizing with others is important in almost all situations.
You are a good negotiator – because sometimes it’s not about making people happy at all costs, it’s about finding a win-win that everyone can live with and move forward in harmony. You can accept that sometimes as vets, we don’t win, and we can’t fix everything. And that’s OK.
You trust your instinct when required but are prepared to change your mind when new information points in a different direction.
You are coachable and understand the value of good feedback. Speaking of which, you’re probably a tiny bit nerdy and love getting your feedback in the form of data.
We are a growing Emergency and Specialty Service. We exist because we believe that referral care can be done better for everyone. And there is space for a new wave of specialist care delivering exceptional specialist clinical standards with a strong focus on the people that make that happen. We’re looking for other people who believe the same thing as we do to help us make this dream come true.
We were originally founded years ago as a collective of the Roanoke area’s veterinarians to be able to offer after hours emergency service to their clients. We have evolved into a 24-hour emergency and critical care service facility. Since then we have continued to work closely with our referring practices and the local community. We believe that animals and vets deserve the best chance at a happy, healthy life and our service allows both groups to thrive.
While the care of animals is important, we also recognize that we can't do that if we don't care for our people too. So, we’ve built a practice based on the following values:
Respect for medicine and relationships.
Being kind to others.
Being honest and open in our dealings with those around us.
Having attention to detail because sometimes it’s this that unlocks a case or makes a client or team mate’s day.
Doing what we say we’ll do because acting with integrity is never the wrong move.
Honoring our teammates because we know that without a shared bond of trust, our jobs get ten times harder.
Making the conscious choice to show us each day and make the practice a positive and energizing place to be.
Cake - if you cook then basically, the job is yours. (OK, that’s not quite true, but it would definitely be a tick in the plus column.)
Your mental health and professional development are also extremely important, so you can expect us to cater to these things in the form of support and generous CE budget.
Benefits & Salary
As a valued member of our team you can expect:
A generous base salary of $85,000- $120,000 depending on experience
A production-based bonus- 25% of gross for total compensation (including benefits)
A CE training budget and time off for attendance of conferences
Vacation- 2 weeks
A clear idea why we do what we do and how you work helps us to achieve that.
A personal development plan so you can achieve your dreams as you help us to achieve ours – together we succeed.
The role will involve the following (though this is not exhaustive):
Medical case management
ER Ultrasound generation and interpretation (this would be highly regarded, but it’s not a deal breaker if you don’t have this). Communicating with clients and referring vets
