The Houston SPCA employs seven full time veterinarians at our well-equipped facilities with ultrasound, dental machine and x-ray and in-house laboratory equipment. Additionally there is a state-of-the art hospital expansion which is planned to open in 2019. We provide the most comprehensive array of animal adoption, shelter, rescue, rehabilitation and other programs and services in the Gulf Coast area.
Veterinarians are our ambassadors for animal welfare programs. They provide knowledge, information and care in a helpful, positive and accessible manner for the welfare of animals and the Houston SPCA’s mission.
Essential Functions of the position:
Provide compassionate care to all animals in need.
General supervision of Veterinary Technicians
Responsible for the instruction of the fourth year veterinary students during their placement.
Vaccinate against diseases, such as distemper and rabies.
Diagnose animal health problems.
Medicate animals suffering from infections or illnesses.
Perform surgery. Treat and dress wounds.
Educate clients, coworkers and volunteers on needed topics.
Build relationships with clients, co-workers, volunteers and public.
Follow protocols and standards of care set forth by Houston SPCA
Be an ambassador for the Houston SPCA at all times
Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Knowledge, skill and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Graduation from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DMV or VMD)
Eligible to be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Texas
Current DEA license for controlled substances
Ability to physically and comfortably interact with animals
Continually build positive relationships with coworkers, volunteers, clients and the public
Ability to communicate effectively
Valid Driver’s License and insurable under the Houston SPCA auto policy
