SoBran is seeking a BehavioralVeterinary Technician I to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Poolesville, Maryland (LARC 8).
OVERVIEW: Responsibilities of this position are that of a Veterinary Technician I for SoBran’s animal care contracts.
Primary duties may include the following:
Understand and follow all Animal Study Proposals, Standard Operating Procedures, and Quality Assurance Standards
Understand and apply basic animal behavior training techniques
Perform cognitive function testing using a Wisconsin General Test Apparatus
Perform data collection
Organize behavioral data for analyses
Assist the research staff with examinations and procedures, and alert them to emergencies or other animal related problems
Prepare and distribute animal diet, enrichment, clinical treatments (Topical, PO, IM, SQ, IV, ID), and documentation as directed
Safely and correctly handle and restrain animals for observation and procedure
Collect and record physiological data (pulse, respiration, heart rate, body temperature, etc.)
Calculate drug dosages and administration frequencies
Identify and communicate signs of abnormal health and behavior in multiple species
Maintain medical records accurately
Assist the veterinary and research staff with surgical preparations and procedures
Collect, preserve and prepare blood, urine, stool, and tissue samples for testing and shipment
Participate in all required trainings (topics may include: animal specific information and technical procedures, medical care, OSHA, regulatory, ASP support, and standard operating procedures)
Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned
Schedule Requirements: Duty schedules are set at the discretion of the unit supervisor and/or SoBran Management to meet the requirements of the contract. Shifts typically occur between 7:00 am and 3:30 pm Monday through Friday. Employees may be required to work beyond their scheduled shift or on non-scheduled days when unanticipated or emergency situations arise.
Employees’ appointed to the position of Veterinary Technician I must meet one of the following standards prior to appointment:
An Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology
Bachelor’s degree in one of the Physical Sciences, Animal Sciences, or related discipline
Certification: AALAS certification at the LAT level preferred. Must successfully complete the ALAT exam within one calendar year of appointment to this position.
