The Manager, Veterinary Services is a key role in maintaining the highest level of excellence in medical processes and welfare for shelter animals and the community. We have 5 Veterinarians on staff, including our Chief of Shelter Medicine, 20 veterinary support staff and many volunteers supporting this busy practice of privately owned animals and shelter animals.
This role leads a team of skilled veterinary support staff in a state of the art facility with updated equipment, offering high quality spay / neuter services to the public, and the highest standard of care to homeless shelter animals through our in-house shelter medicine program. This is a highly collaborative role partnering with other key stakeholders to accomplish HSSV objectives, including veterinarians, shelter operations management, marketing, development and volunteer programs.
Directly manage all employees in the Medical Operations department, including supervisors, veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, medical receptionists, volunteers, and student interns (does not manage veterinarians)
Develop best practices while managing the day-to-day business functions of the medical center
Manage innovative medical programs and services that provide high quality veterinary care to shelter animals and homeless or underserved pets in the community (i.e., our mobile spay/neuter clinics)
In conjunction with the Director, Medical Operations, develop and maintain an annual operating budget and department goals
Promote sustainable department change management to support innovation and continuous improvement
Promote transparency in communication and information flow across the organization, and lead by example
Ensure excellent customer service is provided to all internal and external customers
Work collaboratively and effectively in a cross-functional environment with other departments to accomplish HSSV’s goals
Maintain the department’s inventory control system (Cubex) to track, manage, and secure stock of supplies
Create, promote, and follow safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment for employees, volunteers, clients and animals
Successful people management experience a must
Operational business acumen in a veterinary practice setting, veterinary hospital setting, or shelter setting
Previous experience in the safe and humane handling of animals. Knowledge about the concepts of fear-free pets is a plus
Work well in a collaborative environment with a cross-functional management team
Effective problem-solving and decision-making ability
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to a diverse range of audiences and settings
Demonstrable history of good judgment when addressing employee issues, animal-related concerns, or while working with the public
Ability to handle multiple tasks at once in a fast-paced environment
Committed to the mission of HSSV
Business degree or equivalent work experience. RVT and/or veterinary assistant experience is a plus, but not required
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including holidays and weekends
